Add live chat to your WordPress site

No need for yet another chat plugin: one line in your WordPress site’s footer, and the Hooky bubble is on every page. You reply to your visitors from your phone.

Why Hooky on WordPress

WordPress chat plugins often add their own settings, tables and updates to your site. Hooky stays outside: one tag that loads the bubble, and everything else (conversations, notifications, stats) lives at Hooky. Handy too if you have other sites built with Lovable or Framer: they all land in the same inbox.

Method 1: with the WPCode plugin (simplest)

  1. Create your Hooky account (free for one site), add your site with its address, and copy the <script> tag from Sites.

  2. Install the WPCode plugin (“WPCode – Insert Headers and Footers + Custom Code Snippets”): Plugins › Add New, search for “WPCode”, install and activate.

  3. Open Code Snippets › Header & Footer in the admin menu.

  4. Paste the tag into the Footer section (it’s inserted before </body> across the site), then save (Save Changes).

The tag to paste (yours contains your site’s real key):

<script src="https://heyhooky.com/widget.js" data-site-key="SITE_PUBLIC_KEY" async></script>

Already using another header and footer plugin? It works too: paste the tag into its “footer” or “before </body>” field.

Method 2: in your child theme

Rather not add a plugin? Add these lines to your child theme’s functions.php (not the parent theme’s, which an update would overwrite):

add_action( 'wp_footer', function () {
  echo '<script src="https://heyhooky.com/widget.js" data-site-key="SITE_PUBLIC_KEY" async></script>';
} );

Themes call the wp_footer hook right before </body>, classic and block themes alike.

Check that the bubble shows up

Open your site in a private window and reload: the bubble is at the bottom of the screen. Send a test message: it lands in Messages.

No bubble? A caching plugin may be serving the old version of your pages: clear the cache (and your host’s or CDN’s). Also check that the site’s address is in the allowed addresses in Hooky, if you declared any. A plugin that “optimizes” or delays JavaScript can also block the tag: exclude heyhooky.com/widget.js in its settings.

WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress?

On a WordPress you host yourself (WordPress.org), both methods work. On WordPress.com, installing a plugin requires a paid plan: on the free plan, you won’t be able to add WPCode or edit the theme.

Reply to your visitors

A notification on your phone, and you reply from the Hooky app (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android) or the web dashboard. Your visitor doesn’t create an account, can attach a photo or a PDF, and if they leave after giving their email, your reply reaches them by email.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with WooCommerce?

The bubble shows on every page, shop and cart included. To count your orders, call Hooky.track("purchase", { value: … }) on the confirmation page, or send the event from the server with the site’s secret key (docs).

Does Hooky set cookies?

No. The bubble only keeps the visitor’s conversation token in the site’s local storage, to find it again on their next visit. Stats don’t track anyone.

Does the bubble pick up my theme’s colors?

It’s isolated from your theme (Shadow DOM), so neither your CSS nor your plugins distort it. You pick its color, its side and its welcome message in Hooky.

Which language does it speak?

The page’s language (<html lang>, which WordPress fills in), among English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German. Otherwise, the browser’s. You can force it with data-lang (docs).
