ChatGPT integration

Add live chat to a website built with ChatGPT

Your site came out of a conversation with ChatGPT, or Codex coded it in your repository. To add chat, stay in the conversation: paste the Hooky prompt, grab the updated files, put them online. Then you reply from your phone.

Why add chat to a site built with ChatGPT

ChatGPT gave you a website in a few messages. What’s missing is the link with your visitors: the ones who want a quote, a date, a detail. Rather than adding a form and an inbox to watch, Hooky puts a chat bubble on your pages and the messages in your pocket.

In a ChatGPT conversation

  1. Create your Hooky account (free for one site), add your site and copy the prompt from Sites: the key is already in it.

  2. Go back to the conversation where ChatGPT wrote your site, or open a new one with your HTML files attached, and paste the prompt.

  3. Grab the updated files: each page should have the tag right before </body>, and nothing else changed. Compare quickly with the old version.

  4. Replace the old files at your host (Netlify, Vercel, GitHub Pages, your web host…).

The prompt for ChatGPT

Add the Hooky chat bubble to my site, on every page. Paste this tag once per page, right before </body> (or once in the shared template, if there is one):

<script src="https://heyhooky.com/widget.js" data-site-key="SITE_PUBLIC_KEY" async></script>

Don’t change the script URL or the data-site-key attribute, don’t shorten anything and don’t change anything else. Give me back each modified file in full, ready to replace the old one.

“Don’t shorten anything” matters: on a long file, an AI can be tempted to abbreviate part of the code. Check that the files stay roughly the same size.

With Codex

If your site lives in a GitHub repository, hand the task to Codex: paste the same prompt, Codex finds the shared template, adds the tag and offers you the change to review. Once merged, your host redeploys the site as usual.

Codex can also read our docs for AI: start the prompt with “Read https://heyhooky.com/llms.txt”, and it will also know how to track signups or orders with Hooky.track.

Check that the bubble shows up

Open your live site and reload: the bubble is at the bottom of the screen. Send a test message: it lands in Messages. The preview inside ChatGPT (canvas) isn’t your site: the bubble may not show there, so always test on the published address.

Nothing? Check that the new files are online (clear the cache), that the tag is on the page you opened, and that its address is in the site’s allowed addresses in Hooky.

Reply to your visitors

You reply from the Hooky app (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android) or the web dashboard. Your visitors write without an account, can attach a photo or a PDF, and if they leave after giving their email, your reply follows them by email with a link to pick the conversation back up.

Frequently asked questions

ChatGPT made up a key

The key always comes from your Hooky account, in Sites. Copy the prompt from there: it contains the real one. A made-up key doesn’t work, and the bubble simply stays hidden.

My site is a single HTML page

That’s the simplest case: one line before </body>, and you’re done. You can even paste it yourself in a text editor.

Can ChatGPT create my Hooky account?

It takes a tool that can send a request to our API, like Codex or an agent with terminal access. The details are in the docs. Otherwise, create your account yourself: it’s free and quick.

Which language does the bubble speak?

Your page’s (<html lang>): English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or German. Otherwise, the visitor’s browser language.
